The name of the Lord Jesus Christ has the power to treat incurable diseases, fulfill needs, find answers to insurmountable problems, release the oppressed, and change entire nations over the course of history, as evidenced by the countless songs composed to glorify this name.

We know that Jesus Christ is the Messiah (the Anointed One); He embodies the manifestation of humanity’s hope and the fulfillment of age-old prophecies. God declares in Luke 9:35 that Jesus Christ holds great authority and influence, as God Himself proclaimed, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him.”

Many Christians believe that there is power in the name of Jesus[1]. This is true, but it is important to understand what this entails in reality.

Is There Power In The Name Of Jesus?

While there is indeed power in the name of Jesus, there isn’t any “magical” force associated with His name. We should not anticipate being granted any distinct abilities, results, or an improved relationship with God by merely mentioning the name “Jesus.”

In order for anyone who calls on Him in faith to be granted salvation and deliverance from sin (Romans 10:13), Jesus gave His own blood and life as a sacrifice to save sinners, and He used His authority to raise them and bring them back to life (John 10:18). The power of declaring Jesus’ name manifests itself in many different ways, as written in the Bible.

  • Signs and wonders are performed in the name of your holy servant Jesus (Acts 4:30)
  • Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved (Romans 10:13)
  • Whatever you ask in my name, I will do (John 14:13)
  • In the name of Jesus, every knee should bow (Philippians 2:10)
  • You were washed, you were sanctified, and you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 6:11)
  • There is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12)
  • Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name! (Luke 10:17)

How Do We Get Power In The Name Of Jesus?

Jesus didn’t provide His disciples with a secret word or code; He simply called them and gave them authority under His name, as indicated in Matthew 10:1, “Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out unclean spirits and to heal every disease and sickness.”

In order to carry out their mission and fulfill the purpose of the One who sent them, the apostles relied on the power of Jesus’ name. We can access the same power with just a simple request. Once we have it, we must apply it to follow in the footsteps of the disciples.

How Do We Activate The Power In The Name Of Jesus?

Though Jesus did perform miracles, His name is not a magic word, at least not in the literal sense. But both prayer and faith can harness the power of His name.

We have the strength of Jesus in action within us when we pray. By embracing the authority of the name of Jesus, we can live a more meaningful and purposeful life, as written in Colossians 3:17: “Anything you do, in word or action, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus.”

“The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will serve as a reminder of all I have said to you,” says Jesus in John 14:26. He understood from the very beginning that we would need assistance in order to grow in faith and find strength.

How Do We Apply The Power In The Name Of Jesus?

The name of Jesus is a powerful tool that we can use to overcome many of our trials and tribulations in life. By speaking the name of Jesus, we are declaring that His name is above every situation that we face. This can be especially powerful when we are facing difficult situations or attacks from the enemy.

Jesus is the only one who can set us free from the chains of wickedness and chaos. In Luke 10:19, Jesus says, “I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.” We do not have to live as slaves to sin anymore because “if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36).

There is no specific way to pray and call on the name of Jesus. Simply acknowledging His authority and power and inviting Him to work on your behalf is enough.

5 Ways You Can Have Power In The Name Of Jesus

The name of Jesus is not just a title or a label. It is a representation of who Jesus is and the authority He possesses. The name of Jesus embodies all of the power and authority that Jesus has, including His ability to forgive sins, heal the sick, and cast out demons. When we use the name of Jesus, we are tapping into the authority that He has given us.

1. Believing That He Is Our Rescuer, Healer, And Provider

Think about all the different names and positions that Jesus Christ has held. Believe that He is our good shepherd and that He will lead us through life (John 10:11–18). Furthermore, we have a “great high priest who has passed through the heavens” and atoned for all of our transgressions (Hebrews 4:14–16).

According to Philippians 4:19, we are blessed with a provider for our necessities. And because Jesus is known as the “Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6) and “he himself is our peace” (Ephesians 2:14), we can be at peace as well.

2. Resisting Temptation

Accept the fact that we are powerless to accomplish anything without Him (John 15:5), especially when we are confronted with temptations. We can rest assured that His power and might is perfected in our weaknesses (2 Corinthians 12:9–11).

3. Dispelling The Darkness

Given that Jesus is the light of the entire earth, the “true light that gives light to everyone,” as said in John 1:9, believe that the glory of God will shine through. We don’t have to live in the dark as believers in God since we possess “the light of life” (John 8:12).

4. Saying A Genuine Prayer

Believe that as we entrust God with these demands, His power and strength will manifest in our lives. The effectiveness of our prayers made in Jesus’ name is emphasized in John 14:13–14: “And I will accomplish whatever you ask in my name, so the Father may be exalted in the Son. Anything you ask of me in my name, I will fulfill.” We will be granted eternal life and eternal salvation through the power of Jesus’ name and God’s glory.

5. Fulfilling Your God-Given Purpose

Through the power, guidance, and ability of the Holy Spirit, we are instructed by the Bible to “proclaim this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, and cast out demons. You have been given and should offer freely” (Matthew 10:7–8).

Conclusion

While the notion of drawing strength from Jesus is a common belief among many, it is important to note that His name does not inherently possess any supernatural abilities. Merely declaring the name “Jesus” does not guarantee us any extraordinary outcomes, wonders, miracles, or a more intimate bond with God.

However, we do have the ability to access the power and authority embodied in the name of Jesus, so long as we ask for them with a humble heart. Once we obtain this power, we must use it to emulate the actions of His followers, who persevered and fulfilled their divine purpose in Jesus’ name.
